Kristin Qian, musician/ artist will appear in Seaside, on Sept. 07, 2013, between 6:30PM to 8:pm at Fairweather House and Garden.

Kristin Qian began her violin studies at age 3, and piano and composition at 5. She was the first-place winner of the 2008 and 2010 Oregon Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) Junior Strings Competition. She made her solo debut with the Portland Youth Philharmonic Young Strings Ensemble at age 11 and debuted with the Portland Youth Philharmonic’s Camerata Chamber Orchestra in 2012. Kristin won the Jewish Community Orchestra Young Artists Concerto Competition and performed solo with the orchestra in 2008 and was a laureate in the 2011 Vancouver Symphony Orchestra Young Artists Concerto Competition. Kristin is a two-time winner of the MetroArts Young Artists Debut. The Van Buren Concerto Concert Competition (2010, 2012), and has performed Mozart’s Fifth Violin Concerto and Mendelssohn Violin Concerto with Maestro Niel Deponte. Kristin was assistant concertmaster and concertmaster of the Portland Youth Philharmonic and its Camerata Chamber Orchestra. At 13, Kristin was invited to and selected as the concertmaster of the 2011 American High School Honors Performance Series Orchestra at Carnegie Hall. Since the summer of 2004, Kristin has participated in music festivals and competitions in China, France, Argentina, and the United States. In July 2012, Kristin was the youngest violinist to be invited to take part in the 2nd International Violin Competition Buenos Aires in Argentina, and recently, Kristin was a semifinalist in the 2013 Thomas and Evon Cooper International Violin Competition. Kristin is an artist-in-residence with the Oregon Coast Chamber Music Society.

As a pianist, at age 9, Kristin was the youngest competitor invited to participate in the 2007 Virginia Waring International Piano Competition in California. In 2008, she was a semifinalist in the 1st Tureck International Bach Competition for Young Pianists in New York City. Kristin won the 2006 Trula Whelan Concerto Competition. In 2009, she received an award in the Oregon MTNA Junior Piano Competition. Kristin was also a finalist of Metro Arts Young Artists Debut. Concerto Competition Piano category and was a finalist of Portland Youth Philharmonic’s 2013 Piano Concerto Competition.

Kristin is also an accomplished visual artist. She has had many solo and group exhibitions including at the Portland French School, George Fox University, Pacific Northwest College of Art, Marylhurst University, Fairweather House and Garden, the Westin Galleria Hotel in Houston, Texas, Wieden + Kennedy, the Governor Hotel, and the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall Grand Lobby among other Portland galleries. In 2002, she was featured on the KOIN TV live segment “Painting Prodigy” from Shoen Library at Marylhurst University for her solo painting exhibition. Kristin received the Creativity Award and praise from critics for her oil painting “L’humain et l’espace” at the NASA-sponsored The Next Golden Age 18th International Academy of Astronautics Human in Space Symposium International Youth Art Competition. Kristin’s paintings have been collected by George W. Bush, organizations, and individual collectors.

Kristin is a senior at Catlin Gabel School and at the same time, she studies and works with Dr. Cristina Tognon of Oregon Health & Science University in molecular biology research at OHSU’s Knight Cancer Institute Druker Lab since April 2013. She is also in the John Hopkins University’s Center for Talented Youth program and Stanford University’s Education Program for Gifted Youth. Kristin completed college-level courses including AP Calculus BC at age 14. She currently is a math and French teaching assistant, as well as a writing tutor at school. Kristin is also the President of Catlin Gabel’s Model United Nations Team and a Committee Chair for the Oregon Model United Nations Conference.
