2014 FINALE, Painting Seaside LIVE ™ by artist Kimberly Reed.

work in progress for Oct. 4th Finale

In the words of the artist Kimberly Reed:

“I use linen, even if it is more expensive than cotton. I find that it is more resilient to changes in humidity and the fibers processed are longer lasting than cotton. I select the best quality (and highest priced) paints that I can buy. They have a higher pigment load (compared to student quality paints), so a little can go a long way.
For consistency I chose gels that range from soft to extra heavy depending on the finish I desire.
Usually I will have a semi-gloss or a gloss finish, and then, I add transparency. It is the glazing liquid that creates thin, translucent glazing technique. At times I will introduce a mixed-media application for collage effects. I like to observe the painting as a whole, oftentimes, stepping back to think about the art, or will work on several pieces in various stages.
This allows me to view the relationship of the whole image working together and is often achieved by watching the connection of light and shadow throughout the various times of the day in my studio. I rarely work on a small section at a time.”

“The need to create is a driving and binding force in my life. I am moved by that which surrounds me and it is reflected in my work. My paintings are raw, edgy, restless, intense and always evolving. For me, painting is about connection with emotion. It’s about capturing that one moment in time.
That one moment where your emotions are so strong, so mixed up, not known…the work makes for great moments-it’s raw feeling.
One of my favorite quotes from one of my favorite painters: Color is my daylong obsession, joy and torment. –Claude Monet. Take out the word “color” and put in “art” and that quote is perfection,” writes Kimberly Reed in her artist statement.

Artist Kimberly Reed will demonstrate Painting Seaside LIVE ™ during Seaside First Saturday Art Walk, Oct. 4th, 5-7:pm.
