On July 2nd for the opening reception for Power of Two, an exhibition that included regional artists who managed to produce body of work that reads like an oasis of calm, a subtle backdrop during the time of high season in vacation land. Indeed, the show title sounded like a recipe for chaos given the summer busy activities and adventures; yet, when teamed with the artists selected and combined with the work they created, the gallery added a dimension of serenity that was sensed as much as seen. Power of Two through July 31st.

Q: What is gouache painting, you ask?
A: Gouache painting is similar to watercolor painting but is modified to make it opaque. Gouache differs from watercolor in that the particles are larger, the ratio of pigment to water is much higher, and an additional, inert, white pigment such as chalk may also be present. This makes gouache heavier and more opaque, with greater reflective qualities. Gouache generally dries to a different value than it appears when wet (lighter tones generally dry darker, while darker tones tend to dry lighter). Its quick coverage and total hiding power mean that gouache lends itself to more direct painting techniques than watercolor.
About the artist:
Marga and her husband, Tom Stanley, moved from the British West Indies to the North Coast about 10 years ago and have embraced Astoria as their new home, rain and all. Marga says, “I have been fortunate enough to have had my art in galleries from Canada to the British West Indies and the U.S. and now have the pleasure to be one of the founding members of the new Tempo Gallery in Astoria. Marga’s love for animals and children is the inspiration of her work: She works with paper mache, gouache, watercolors and acrylics. Out of her studio, she can also be heard reading bedtime stories in “Marga’s World” on KMUN.
