Barbara Bacon Folawn Artist Statement
With a special interest in plein air painting, I find it satisfying to visit the quiet rural areas of the Willamette Valley or the Oregon coast with pencil and paintbrush to capture the light and colors of our natural environment. When I paint on location, I lose myself in the moment and use all my senses to learn about and interpret what I see in front of me. Whether I am using a small sketchbook, a canvas or watercolor paper, I treasure the process and results of plein air painting, which often inspires larger works in the studio. As I look back at these sketches and paintings, I remember very clearly the feeling of the day, the light, the fragrances, the sounds, and the colors of each scene that I captured.”

Initial inspiration for painting came from attending an art travel workshop lead by Mari Le Glatin-Keis. The instructor included some of my travel sketches in her book titled The Art of Travel with a Sketchbook, which highlighted workshop students’ drawings using watercolors and colored pencil.

Barbara Bacon Folawn selected the Fairweather exhibition PLACE-BASED for her first show since 2019.
She is an Oregonian who champions natural resources, environmental causes, and art. Indeed, she has immediate family ties that gives free unrestricted public access to all the state’s beaches.
“I am a member of the Watercolor Society of Oregon, Salem Art Association, Keizer Art Association, Salem’s Artists-in-Action, and the Cannon Beach Art Association. I regularly choose to participate in selected regional and statewide art shows.” BBF

Fairweather Gallery’s July exhibition PLACE-BASED, an art show and sale, involves a focus on the importance and uniqueness of place.
While selecting the artworks to local context will appeal to the summertime tourists and visitors, behind the exhibit is an understanding that fosters regional artists and their connection within the community. The exhibit doubles down on a link with the history of both place and keeping close tabs on how artists are based in visual story telling.
