Mark Ward, Sea Turtles Forever

Marc Ward, Seaside resident and founder of Sea Turtles Forever, writes: STF, is an Oregon-based non-profit working to protect endangered sea turtles from extinction as well as our marine environment from marine plastic contamination. Marine-micro plastic debris is accumulating on our ocean beaches and carries toxic contaminants. These contaminants leach into the marine environment when left on the beach threatening the health of wildlife and people.” read more: www.seaturtlesforever.com

Free-falling into the upcoming season, the GUYS TAKE OVER Art Walk on Sept. 7, 2013, is very different from anything Fairweather’s has done before. The exhibition, all by NW men artists, most certainly, will be arranged for optimal display, yet, too, a spotting scope provided by NW naturalist, Neal Maine, will allow the visitors to be completely captivated by viewing through a camera lens a powerful razor-sharp magnification of a Great Horned Owl, a specimen from the “Fish and Wildlife guys”. It’s a really big “thumbs up” event.

Other notable guys appearing: Paul Brent, Painting Seaside LIVE ™, Jan Shield, Tom Hausken, and Nick Brakel. The show, a benefit for Sea Turtles, Forever, scores another first, as Marc Ward, founder/ activist, will speak to the art patrons.

Denise Fairweather states: “We’ve surely re-doubled our usual intense dedication to creating an affair, for and about, well, the NW men artists of art. Truly, it will be an event where patrons and enthusiasts can mingle and be informed in real time guy-speak. The men have just gone ahead and done exactly what they wanted to show, yet, too— it’s a look-book into the fall season.”

The playbook is in!

Having been a part of the North coast community his entire life, Neal Maine is sharing life lessons with Michael Wing, his grandson. They show us all how important it is to be involved. Whether it’s walking the North Coast Land conservancy lands, lending photographic skills and or proudly joining forces supporting the natural lands and its

wildlife, two talented souls are working together to strengthen our community.

Michael is holding his photograph of a pair of reclusive rivers otters found along the Gearhart estuary.

Art patrons continue to be delighted with the kinds of conversations and images that are an everyday part of life for the two men.

Set Four: Jan Shield

Jan Shield grew up in a family of artists and has been painting and sculpting all of his life. He is a Professor of Art at Pacific University, Forest Grove where he has been teaching since 1971. Mr. Shield’s works are included in corporate, public, and private collections across the country including in New York. Through his paintings, prints, murals, and sculptures, Jan shares his deep regard for the most western regions of the United States, particularly Oregon, Hawaii, Japan, China, Australia, and the Pacific Rim. His paintings especially are a comment on Naturalism and symbolism. Other paintings and three-dimensional forms let the viewer feel the power, richness, and substance he discovers in nature through a more abstract style of expression.

Mr. Shield’s studio is located here at Dancing Trees Sanctuary For The Arts. Jan is available by appointment to discuss the sale or commission of his work as well as corporate art consultation and permanent collections placement.

Set Six: Nick Brakel

Nick Brakel holds a BFA in Painting and Printmaking from the University of Wisconsin Superior and recently completed a Northwest’s Emerging Print Makers Residency. In a series of collagraphs, the artist is exploring concerned about water birds and sea mammals that may be affected by climate change. Finding himself often wondering what will happen to the birds and sea creatures as the climate changes. To the artist, the wildlife seem almost like spirit creatures, watching their fate reveal itself, in the future, in the present, and in the present simultaneously.</

What you ask is a collagraph?

It means collage intaglio. Taking mat board and adding gesso, covering it with carborundum or sand, then adding wood burn lines into the work. It is then sealed in with different viscosities, inked and run through a printing press. As with most printmaking there is quite alot of work before you open a bottle of ink.

In Nick’s words:

“For the GUYS TAKE OVER Art Walk I was thinking it might be cool if I brought some printing plates and preliminary drawings to the opening, so I could show people some of the process.”
