Hui-Yong Kim (pronounced He-Young) is a ceramic artist specializing primarily in Asian art forms but also working with current aesthetics and functional pottery. Within traditional art forms, she creates the popular Korean moon jars and vases, where the focus on specific principles of a line is pertinent to the finished product.
She explores various glazing and firing techniques from the kiln and raku firing, creating her glazes for both. Her functional pottery features the playful look of line drawings, glazes, and wearable art. Hui-Yong’s fascination with the galaxy has greatly influenced the creation and application of her glazes, where the result can clearly mimic the planetary movements. Each item is an evolution – occasionally a stroke of genius!
Hui-Yong is a native of South Korea and immigrated to America in her adult years. She has lived and studied in Singapore under Master Chuan Siang Boon and took tutelage in Korea.
She furthered her education at the Portland Community College Ceramic Studio and currently owns and manages her own Galaxy Clay studio.
She is a member of the Oregon Potters Association and participates in shows in Oregon and Washington states. Her work has been exhibited in the Lawrence Gallery, Guardino Gallery and currently featured in Australia’s Clayful magazine by Sophia Cai.
