Distance Flowers, encaustic, by Peg Wells.

What is the difference between cold wax painting and hot wax encaustic painting, you ask?
The key difference between “cold wax” and “hot wax encaustic” is that cold wax is a medium that is used at room temperature, mixed with oil paints, and does not require heat to apply, while hot wax encaustic is a paint made from melted beeswax and pigment that needs to be heated to a molten state to be applied and fused to create layers in a painting; essentially, “cold wax” is a technique used with oil paints, while “encaustic” is a distinct painting medium that relies on heat to fuse layers of wax together.

And, a back story.

Peg Wells had her art in a gallery under the sunny skies of Arizona, where she became a hotshot at hot wax encaustic painting—literally! After the pandemic, her daughter, a doctor, suggested a move to the Pacific Northwest. While touring a senior housing development in charming Charrboneau, Peg was practically bouncing at the thought of having enough space for an art studio. But then came the shocking revelation that she uses a blow torch—cue dramatic music—as her art suddenly became a fire hazard, and poof! The studio space vanished faster than a magician’s rabbit.

Do not worry; the artist embraced the challenge, as so many creative souls do, and passionately mastered the mesmerizing art of cold wax painting. She also found space in another location to continue to paint in hot wax encaustic.
