Sunflowers and Silver (16×20 oil on deep cradled linen) by Melissa Jander.
I began the trio. The sunflowers have such an exuberant presence, and I liked contrasting their warm yellows and ochres with silver’s cooler gleam. The deep burgundy cloth and rich pomegranate colors let me move away from a traditional summery sunflower painting and toward something crisp, bright, and a bit more autumnal. –-Melissa Jander

Lilies and Plums ( 20×16 oil on deep cradled linen) by Melissa Jander
This painting is perhaps the most personal for me. The lilies were a gift from a friend’s garden, which added an extra layer of meaning. Their pale, luminous shapes paired with the darker plums and patterned cloth created a lovely balance of delicacy and richness. I wanted it to retain that feeling of something generously given and then enjoyed while it lasted. –MJ

Dahlias and Pear (16×20 oil on deep cradled linen) by Melissa Jander
This painting completes the group of three for the LAYERED exhibition with a darker, earthier mood. The warm dahlias, brown pear, plums, books, and old stoneware pitcher all seemed to belong together. I especially enjoyed the quiet suggestion of accumulated things and lived experience—the books, the old pottery, seasonal fruit, and flowers at their peak. –MJ
