“Behind the Curtain” monotype by Vicki Baker
To make a monotype, an artist applies ink or paint to a smooth plate, usually made of metal, glass, or plastic. The artist then works the surface to create an image. The artist can use a printing press or print by hand. The finished print is a mirror image of what’s on the plate. Monotypes can have surprising, subtle, dramatic, or painterly results, depending on how the artist works with the technique.
Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione (c. 1610–65) was one of the first artists to explore monotyping, making them from copper etching plates. In the 19th century, William Blake and Edgar Degas also experimented with the technique.

“In the Jungle” monotype by Vicki Baker
Monotypes are prized for their unique textural qualities.
Artists often use monotypes to experiment, hone their style, and break new ground. For example, Adele van Heerden’s watercolor monotypes all feature her characteristic graphic line work in Woody crayon. Heidi Fourie creates monotypes using paintbrushes and watercolor paint.

Opening reception for OFF THE BEATEN PATH, featuring monotype painter Vicki Baker.
I have lived in Oregon for over 30 years. I spent the winters in Fort Myers. From an early age I have delighted in creating art. I have worked in charcoal, pastels, monotypes, and acrylics.I have been studying painting with Lucie Macherowski. Six of my recent paintings have been juried into Fairweather Gallery shows for the summer and early fall seasons in 2024.”
