BRAVE NEW WORLD exhibition

In the context of Mother Nature, a “brave new world” for the fall season refers to the disruptive changes brought on by climate change. Instead of the predictable, natural rhythms that define autumn, we are seeing new, unpredictable patterns in temperature, foliage, and wildlife behavior
. The vibrant reds and golds that typically adorn the landscape at this time have become less reliable, replaced by patches of green and early-brown.
Additionally, we are witnessing alterations in wildlife migration patterns as species adapt to the changing conditions, with some animals arriving earlier or staying longer, which impacts the entire ecosystem. Together, these changes paint a complex portrait of autumn, where traditional expectations clash with the realities of a rapidly changing environment, forcing us to reconsider our relationship with nature and how we prepare for the seasons ahead.
Featuring Jan Shield, Professor Emeritus of Art at Pacific University, Forest Grove, with his pen-and-ink artwork, Dorota Haber Lehigh introduces coastal landscapes in pen and ink and watercolor. In her art, she explores the fragility of our ecosystems, ecological diversity, and codependency. JR Moyer’s art lamp sculptures, Vanessa K. Stokes’ latest pen, ink, and watercolor, and the art of Bill Baily, whose work has been awarded honors in Northwest Watercolor Society shows, in the Portland Art Museum.
“The goal here is to allow grounding and peace in a very fast-paced world. Warm, dim lighting can create a relaxed and intimate atmosphere. There is emotion at play in the interaction between light and darkness …between light source and wood. Creating mood in low light is as much about the shadows as it is about the light. In combining these fascinating pieces of driftwood with the organic shapes of the shades, I hope to allow a unique creation of a calm, introspective space.”

His soulful melodies and heartfelt lyrics create a captivating backdrop, enhancing the overall experience for everyone there.
