Just in from encaustic and cold wax artist Peg Wells.

“Answering What is Still” cold wax on the panel by Peg Wells.

It’s rare for one specific painting medium to have a whole genre of painting associated with it, but Cold Wax Medium is one such medium. Cold Wax Painting is not defined by subject matter nor the degree of realism or abstraction; Cold Wax Painting is unified by artists’ shared interest in experimentation, texture, and the physicality of paint layers.

I married a naval officer, and we traveled to many countries and states. We settled in Oregon a couple of years ago. I started my artistic journey first on the potter’s wheel, then into tile making and designs. When I was first introduced to Encaustics, I knew I had found my niche. Painting with fire enables me to introduce my travel experience into my designs.”  Peg Wells

During a recent HOA relocation interview, Peg Wells, an artist in her 90s, asked if a blow torch studio would be acceptable for her encaustic painting. After learning this would not be permitted, she changed her painting technique to cold wax.

“I have adapted to paint with cold wax in our primary residence in the valley.” –P.W.

I will enthusiastically continue my hot wax encaustic painting in our second home in Seaside.” P.W.

The most significant difference between encaustic and cold wax is that, while with encaustic painting, the wax must be molten to work with and then reheated with a blow torch (fused) once applied to the surface, in cold wax painting, there is no heat involved.

For QUIETUDE, Fairweather’s December exhibition, artist Tedd Chilless.

Quietude: a state of stillness, calmness, and quiet in a place.

I graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1966 with a Bachelors of Architecture. Upon graduation I moved to Portland, OR, where I did my architectural internship for three years before I received my Architect’s license. Then I received a Ford Foundation Fellowship. While on this study I lived and studied in Washington D.C., New York City & Boston where I studied painting.”  TC

After the fellowship I returned to Portland and established my architectural firm. Twenty years ago, as the computers took over my architectural practice I experienced what I called “graphite withdrawal.” It was a major change from sketching eight hours a day to moving only a mouse. I felt I needed to express my artistic skills and began to paint in earnest.”  TC

I have since I retired and now paint full time. The transition from architecture has been easy because of my knowledge of design and composition.

I serve as Oregon State Ambassador and Active Member of the Oregon Society of Artists. TC

I have a studio in Seaside where I paint impasto oils. In addition, since retirement, from the architectural field, I have become involved in the local affairs of neighborhood safety and liveability.

Frequently, I paint during the Fairweather Gallery after-hours events during the winter months. Tedd Chilless, N.W. artist

Welcoming Miksa Salemann for QUIETUDE, Fairweather’s December exhibition.

“None in America” by Miska Salemann

None or nun: A quiet play on the choice of word by the artist.

In 2022, there were reportedly fewer than 42,000 nuns in America, which is a 76% decline over 50 years. At this rate, one estimate said that there will be fewer than 1,000 nuns left in the United States by 2042, according to the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate.

Throughout the painful pandemic and societal upheaval, there remains a need for nuns in America.

Sister Joanne Persch, “I look around me in our community and I see such a vibrant life. It’s changing and growing into something we can’t even imagine.”

“There’s a fair number of women that enter religious life today that are advocates of social justice.” Margaret McGuinness, professor of religion and theology at Lasalle University

Miska Salemann, a self-taught painter who developed her unique artistic style by imitating the works of late 19th-century impressionist masters, has been painting for almost 30 years. In 2000, Salemann was chosen by U.S. ART magazine as one of 25 prominent artists featured and called an ‘emergency success.’

She has instructed hundreds of students ranging from age five to adult in school settings at her “Art Farm” home in Fall City, Wash. Miska’s teaching style stresses more about the importance of self-expression and experimentation than theory-based painting techniques. Acrylic on canvas is Salemann’s medium of choice, and she typically adds six layers of paint to each work.

Famous works of Miska Salemann often depict Madonna, and the Holy Family, art influenced by her Roman Catholic and Russian Greek Orthodox upbringing. Her artworks often incorporate symbolism and iridescent colors that give them a radiant quality.

“Painting is pure joy for me,” Salemann said. “It really brings me peace and happiness.”
