R.J. Marx is headed to Fairweather’s for ‘Portraiture’ on May 4. Opening artist reception 5-7:pm.

R.J. Marx is a leading tenor saxophone stylist, specializing in bebop, swing, hard bop and modern jazz.

After classical and jazz studies, Marx attended Berklee College of Music in Boston in the mid-1970s. While pursuing a career in journalism, he maintained a lifelong interest in jazz. He returned to performance in 2001, continuing studies with celebrated jazz pianist Pete Malinverni and saxophonists Ralph Lalama and Charlie Lagond.

Marx, a founding member of the Katonah Studio Jazz Band, appeared regularly at prestige venues throughout the metro New York region.
Moving to the Oregon Coast in 2015, he teamed with guitarist John Orr, drummer Dave Gager and bassist Joe Church to record and produce “The R.J. Marx Quartet,” a collection of hard-driving and contemporary jazz tunes, through Bent Rabbit Records.

As a duo, Marx and Orr appeared in February with jazz great Tom Grant and singer Shelly Rudolph in concert. They gig along the coast and can be heard monthly at WineKraft in Astoria.

As a solo player, Marx weaves a musical history reflecting his influences from swing, bebop and modern jazz, inspired by Coleman Hawkins, Charlie Parker, Sonny Rollins and the greats of American music.
