Growing up with both my parents being artists having lived in the Northwest, Mexico, Hawaii, and traveling extensively my eyes have seen a lot and my experiences have been quite varied. The exhibit  features Fairweather artist and hostess Kathy Esnard, Seaside textile artist Cicely Gilman, artist-in-residence Vanessa K. Stokes, and Renee Hafeman, a vintage Chanel jewelry creator and designer.

My love of pottery came later in life.  My early years I studied dance and wanted to teach ballet and tap, but sometimes life provides other opportunities.  Instead of a dance teacher followed the path of special education, transitioning students from high school to community college. 
 
I was shadowing a student in a ceramics class when I discovered how therapeutic clay can be.  
Today, I have my own studio where I create functional and sculptural  art.
 
I love trying new forms with handbuilding, making a complete set of dinnerware or a piece of garden art. Sometimes I don’t have a plan when I sit down at the wheel and just let the clay determine if it will become a cup, bowl or platter.  
 
I love bringing my simplistic, minimalist creativity to my pottery.  I am very much into sensory and touch, a mug must feel good in your hands, a bowl can tell you I’m made for ice cream or fill me up with popcorn!

Intarsia is a woodworking technique that involves fitting pieces of wood into a solid wood matrix to create a mosaic. “Intarsia” may come from the Latin word interserere, which means “to insert”. Intarsia was popular in 15th-century Italy and was used to decorate many surfaces, including walls, ceilings, floors, furniture, and jewelry boxes. 
About the artist:
After 35 years, Mike Brown retired from a career in the glass business and has pursued his passion for woodworking full-time. He started creating exotic wood intarsia pictures, taking classes from Judy Gale Roberts, a premier intarsia artist. He won multiple Best of Show awards at the annual Artistry in Wood juried shows, as well as the Best of Class and Best of Division awards.
